5:09 pm I took the vow

Interested in making the globe a more peaceful place?

There is a new global movement and website, called “I Take the Vow”, which emerged from an Alliance for a New Humanity conference in Barcelona with Deepak Chopra. On the site, you can make the personal vow (“I Take The Vow of non-violence in my thoughts, my speech and my actions”) and enroll others in the pledge as well. See: http://itakethevow.com/home

2:28 pm DVT Awareness Pin

I was having difficulty finding where I could buy a DVT awareness pin in Canada. I found a company in the U.S. that delivered! It’s called Personalized Cause, (slogan; Now It’s Personal), at www.personalizedcause.com. The pin I purchased is white and red, standing for DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). My goal is that by wearing this pin, it will create curiosity, questions, and awareness. For a photo, see the website or in My Personal Story in the August 2008 edition of my newsletter coming soon!

1:26 pm Laptop skins for a custom look

I love my macbook, I really do. But I must admit that my creative side longed for a custom cover design such as those that dress some of the pc laptops out there recently. Well I ran into someone who had a color cover case, which had me thinking that there are products out there somewhere. After googling around I came across Vision Skins, who while they have a multitude of skins for phones, ipods, and universal sized laptops, they had macbook specific ones on eBay. Some of the designs are a little wild! I picked “Dream” and just received it yesterday. It went on like a dream and looks like a gloss custom paint job. I can’t believe it! So if you are looking for a little pick-me-up for your laptop, there are a lot of options out there. Enjoy browsing!

9:36 pm An Open Road

I just finished reading “The Open Road: The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama” by Pico Iyer, and wow–what a great read! I’ve always admired the Dalai Lama for many reasons. Primarily, because he encourages people to believe in the faith they choose–he is so very open minded–and reminds us that the power for peace and for transformation lies within us (not outside of us), a portion of philosophy which I am a huge advocate of. This book was compelling, engaging, and a definite recommend!

Here’s a quote: “A Buddhist talks not so much about good and evil as about ignorance and awakening; in that sense, he brings all responsibility inward, so as not to waste time blaming people outside himself, but to see how he can better understand (and therefore solve) the problem within.”

11:15 am National Geographic Africa WildCam!

I had to include this resource because I just love the beauty of nature and wildlife, and want to share it with others!

I really enjoy getting my new e-newsletters from National Geographic… so many amazing things to see and learn about! The latest one included a link to their African WildCam, located at the Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana, Africa. See at: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/wildcamafrica/. It’s a 24 hour LIVE broadcast (streaming video), so you have to time it right for where you live, so you can see it at the best time, which is their dawn and dusk. I find it so captivating, that I try to take a peek between around 10-midnight (Pacific Time), which is dawn there, on the nights that I’m on the computer. (Note: I’m not sure how long this will be available, as National Geographic has various webcams around the globe that go live from time to time.) If you go visit the site and the camera is still, be patient because it does make it’s way around the pond, and in the early morning it appears to be manned, as they zoom in our the various animals and birds.

There are a ton of animals and birds that go to the pond on the cam, (“Pete’s Pond”) as it’s a main source. So far I’ve been lucky enough to see impalas (look like gazelles), wildebeests, warthogs, boars rolling in mud, vervet monkeys, crocodiles, lots of different birds, jackals, and a huge and amazing herd of elephants. The elephants have been so compelling to watch, especially since they have babies in the group, who are still a little wobbly trying to come out of the pond from their drinking. The mothers and fathers have to push and pull and direct the little gaffers with their trunks. So adorable.

Also, they capture the sunrises and sunsets, which from what I’ve seen are spectacular!

I can’t wait to see if I can catch a glimpse of the leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and zebras!

Enjoy!!

10:37 am A MEANINGFUL HOLIDAY ACTIVITY

For years now, each month I go to a discussion group. It started out being called the “Life Purpose Circle”, then shifted to more of a spiritual discussion group. In any case, we’re a group of unconditional friends who encourage each other to pursue our passions, and we explore all types of meaningful books, movies, etc. to discuss and learn from.

In November, we were brainstorming how to celebrate our December gathering this year and came up with some great ideas that I thought would be great to share here. These activities could be done with family, friends, relatives, or coworkers. Or, you may chose make this a private soul’s journey, and complete it in a personal journal…a nice way to close the year.

Here’s what we’ll be doing:

* Sharing: Each person will share a personal Christmas story of significance, and how it’s linked to what Christmas means to them. (This is how my Personal Story at the beginning of this newsletter came about, but you don’t have to make yours as long as that!)

* Gratitude for the past year: We’ll make a green poster board size cut-out of a Christmas tree. Then we’ll make “ornaments” using “Post-it” notes. Each person writes something on their ornament that they have individually been grateful for from 2007, and then posts on the tree. Sharing can either be done out loud when posting, or for larger groups, everyone can gather round to take a look once it’s complete.

* Looking forward to 2008: We’ll put “presents” (more “Post-it” notes!) under the tree. These represent the gifts we hope to give to our group in the year ahead, or things that we hope to create within our group for the year ahead.

(You’ll note that this newsletter is written from my own experience and that in my family tradition we celebrate Christmas. To honor different cultures and faiths, think of ways that you could alter these ideas to fit your beliefs. I’d love to hear different methods used! Please share with my other readers by sending them in!)
